Adventure Recreation will be an Important Component of the 21st Century Parks Plan

Imagine a park, only minutes from your home, and within easy reach of the entire Louisville Metro area, where you can ride a bike one day, canoe the next, and attend a soccer tournament on the following weekend. Recent work by our park planners emphasizes a remarkable variety of recreational opportunities for The Fork. In addition to ball fields, recreational paths, and picnic pavilions, the planners at Wallace, Roberts, and Todd, in partnership with Louisville's own Bravura, are exploring a theme of adventure recreation.

This will include a 20 mile long canoe trail, hiking and mountain biking trails, permit camping in the backwoods section, and a canopy walk, perhaps even a zip line and climbing walls. Vista points will provide both lovely views and promontories from which to observe wildlife, while a community meeting room will host arts and crafts classes and outdoor education programs. With a goal that these parklands be "well-used and well-loved," we want to develop a variety of recreational themes and amenities that will serve all ages and abilities. With an eye towards fun and health, we believe that the incorporation of new and diverse amenities will help draw people outdoors.
